Sadness sets in.
Today I'm temporarily upset. This is because I am finally coming to terms with the fact that I'll be leaving some really good friends here. I'm still incredibly excited about my new school, but I'm kind of sad that I will have to say goodbye to all my friends. Actually, I won't even get to say goodbye to a sizeable chunk of them, since they're out of town for the summer and won't be coming back until well after I leave (which is this Friday, for those keeping score at home). So that's been bothering me today.
Also something that's been bothering me is a friend of mine... This person isn't having the luck I had in the transfer applicant cycle. I don't know what the problem is. Friend X is just as qualified as I am. I am really hoping Friend X gets into my school, because a) Friend X deserves this, and b) it would be nice to have someone from "home" around next year.
So good luck Friend X. I hope you get the news you're looking for this week.

Maybe, like you said, it's because Prof. X wrote a kick-ass recommendation letter (and your friend didn't have that edge.)
You know I'd bet money that this is it.
It just sucks, because this person deserves to get in somewhere, and hasn't. Friend X feels bad, because most of the people who wanted to transfer (and were ranked in the top 10%) have, and they're the only person who hasn't. It's puzzling everyone.
On a totally unrelated topic: What kind of backpack should I get (you know, the non-gunner type)?
Should I get one which stowes my laptop too?
I managed to get by with my jansport this year. I know a lot of people who have those over the shoulder bags. It really depends on how big your laptop is. If you have a really big monster of a machine, you may need a regular backpack and a laptop bag. If you've got a small, compact laptop a slightly bigger version of a jansport will probably suffice. Don't forget, you should have a locker where you can ditch extra stuff. You can fit 2-3 casebooks and a computer in a regular backpack... you probably shouldn't need to take any more than that home at any one time.
If you take notes on your laptop, all you really need to carry with you are books and the computer. It's not like you need a binder for all of your classes. Most profs usually put the syllabus and any other necessary course documents on blackboard (or your school's equivalent), so you don't really need binders or notebooks. If you do take notes by hand, a single 4 subject notebook should suffice. (I took notes by hand for most of the first semester, until I figured out what was going on... I can type waaaay faster than I write, and I think I would've just taken dictation instead of paying attention if I took notes on the laptop from the beginning. Hand-writing forces you to pick through the lecture/socratic dialogue to find the stuff that's worth writing down.
I have a 15" screen. I think it should fit inside a backpack.
The only thing that worries me now is the rain. From what I've heard, it doesn't drizzle in law_school_town. It pours! I hope my laptop doesn't get wet.
It should be fine. Mine managed to get through many a' thunderstorm. Those little guys are more resilient than we give them credit for.
